kazi fresh #2

after one week of preparation a new motivated group started!

salum, seif, fabrice, silas, andrin and marco visited on monday with mwinyi our instructor the three schools we want to work on this kazi fresh. kazi is swahili for "work time".

both salum and fabrice already participated in the first kazi fresh. they guided the others through the first school - kombeni primary. kombeni secondary school and maungani school were also visited.

fabrice and andrin went again to the primary school in kombeni to build three desks from the scraps of the first kazi. with some rope and two scraps it was also possible to rebuild the broken swings.

after two days they joined the others in the secondary school which is also located in our neighbour village kombeni. the furniture of this school is made with chairs and tables instead of desks.

for the weekend we went to nungwi and kendwa to enjoy the amazing beaches of zanzibar!

conclusion of this week:

3 repaired desks

2 Swings

50 tables

31 chairs

1 light switch

2 water tabs

1 water spout

week 3

the last week of our first kazi fresh - work camp. our participants focused on fixing all the holes in the roof. all seating possibilities are repaired. now ideas like a shoe shelf for the nursery students were very welcome.

one evening we visited the chuoni english center. in the evening combo a friend of mine voluntary teaches english to students from grade 1 to 10. we decided to support his lesson to the younger students and tell them a little bit about ourselves, kila kitu fresh and switzerland.

yannick and piet left zanzibar and returned home safely, with many nice experiences and new skills. fabrice and I will stay for another month.

conclusion after the first kazi fresh:

48 repaired desks

13 tables

11 chairs

11 doors

10 windows

1 cardboard

3 new shoe shelves

we say, there is much karma invested and we wish all participants good luck for the next steps to a brighter future.

week 2

motivated we started into the second week. the foreign participants started to get used to the climate and the work environment here. the teachers and students like their guests and asked kindly, if we would introduce ourselves in the english classes and to chat with the students for practice. happily the students helped us by carrying the broken desks to our workspace and by bringing the fixed ones back to the classrooms with us. eventually one teacher also climbed a palm tree to serve us an refreshing coconut. ASANTE SANA - thank you very much!

conclusion of the second week: 32 fixed desks, 7 chairs, 3 tables, 6 doors and 6 windows.

our new school desks will be produced in a public technical school, directed by the ministry of education. before starting with the production, we decided to adjust our old arrangement with the ministry, so our relationship will be more sustainable. the duration of this process is hard to predict. our friends here in zanzibar help us very much to push our case. hopefully we can build our first desks in the second kazi fresh.
