Ice Stupa Himalaya

Hello friends,

Jullay! It has been a long time that I wrote to you about our Project Ice Stupa. I am happy to let you all you know that Zanskar Ice Stupa was a great success. It last till 1st of July. Our boys are so proud that they could build a 72 feet’s tall first Ice Stupa in Zanskar valley.

This artificial glacier - the Ice Stupa has made its best contribution for our farmers ploughing their field during the months April-May and keep giving water to the fields up to 1st of July 2019. But of course, the need for water is so large that they need to be built more on a much larger scale and maybe it will be a good idea to build a water dam that it can store the water for a longer period.

As you all know that unfortunately, we could not build more than 72 feet’s as the source water was finished mid of January. It is amazing to see the other ice stupa in Ladakh are still more than 40 feet tall and they are hoping to cross whole summer.

Of course, making artificial glaciers is not easy work. Its need both finical and manpower support. I am happy we could introduce this project in Zanskar valley for the first time, our people are very happy and appreciate a lot.

Our main idea was to show our people about Ice Stupa and actually it was a pilot project. I hope we will have more ice stupa in Zanskar valley in the coming years. I cannot add more than one picture on this page. So I will add on facebook some more pictures please follow this page www.facebook.com

Jullay my dear friends,

How are you all? I am Sorry I didn’t write to you for quite a long time. Since mid of Jan, there has a lot of snowing in Zanskar!

So our Ice Stupa project has been stopped since Jan 26 due to heavy snowfall in Zanskar.
Sonam Wangchuk the local engineer visited Zanskar in Jan and met with our Ice Stupa Team. Actually, our team are in shortage of money so he appreciated the team and donated Rs One lakh and ten thousand rupees (€ 1350) 
Our team are very happy about this and also happy to let you know that our Ice Stupa reached its height of 21 meters on 26 Jan and we will start again soon! At the moment, there is no way from Tungri to Tahan (the neighbouring village) and to Padum no chance!

Dear friends,

Last two weeks have been a tough time for our boys! with -20 temperature the boys have to dig the earth and get the pipe back to earth surface as all the pipelines got frozen. Unfortunately more than 7 days the ice stupa was stopped working in Zanskar!

But they find a new solution to deal with this problem. Without any choice, they let all the pipeline naked on the earth surface and run water during the day and stop it before every midnight and start again the next morning when the sun comes.

We are very thankful to Langmi villager, who came and help our boys! I am very happy to let you know yesterday our Ice Stupa crossed its height of 50 feet and it's moving ahead.....

Our boys celebrate this 50 feet height victory with a prayer flag in front of the ice stupa. you can see in the pictures. I am sorry I cannot upload more than one pictures on this page. Therefore Please go on our facebook page - Ice Stupa Zanskar for more pictures! Thank you :)

Dear Friends,

Just a small update. Zanskar Ice Stupa reached its height of 30 feet by last night. We are very happy and our aim is to go beyond 80+ feet. They are working day and night. I am very proud.

Last weeks, they had some small problem with the water control room as overflow water from the sprinkler tip got inside the tunnel its filled up all the tunnel and got everything freezes, Luckily they could repair it on time and it is working well again. Yahooooo!

Okay, my dear friends, Our Team wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2019 from the midst of Himalaya. We are very Thankful to you all. Merci!

Our Crowdify crowdfunding reached its goal. I am so happy! Thank you my dear friends.

Zanskar Ice Stupa Team are so happy and very thankful to YOU, who kind-hearted and generously supported our project. 


Ice Stupa takes its shape in Zanskar! Till yesterday, the boys have built up 20 feet of ice. I am so proud and excited. I am just waiting for some pictures so that I want to share with you all but the internet is not working well in Padum. You all knew that. Sorry for the that but don’t worry the boys are doing so well in this cold freezing temperature. Two boys stay at the site all the time (day and night) to control the water level and clean the sprinkle tip which often freezes.

I am very happy I have reached almost 60% on the crowdfunding now :) Thank you so much once again for you all.

Zanskar: There was little snow in Zanskar last week but the road is still open. All the necessary equipment for our Project have arrived well in Zanskar. They buy in advance all these pieces of equipment from Ice Stupa Project in Leh which includes HDPF Pipe – 75 mm 500 meters, Gate Valve 1, Mist Sprinkler 1, Ladakhi Sprinkler 2, Tripod 1, Compression Coupling (75 mm) and Compression adaptor (75mm). The bill is yet to pay.

The boys have already finished the pipe laying down under the ground. From tomorrow on they are building the dome site (where the Ice stupa will be built) and hopefully from December they can build the Ice.
