Project Overview

Help us take our music to London! We’ve scored a gig at the legendary Jazz Cafe on November 30, but here’s the catch—the fee doesn’t cover travel for our big band of twelve. This show is a massive opportunity, and we need your help to make it happen. With your support, we can bring our sound to a whole new crowd and take our music to the next level. Let’s turn this dream into reality together!

We're an emerging afrobeat band from Switzerland with a unique sound, and we've been invited by Josh from Somewhere Soul (https://www.instagram.com/som... to perform at London's iconic Jazz Cafe—a venue that has launched many great artists onto the world stage. This is our chance to reach a new audience in the UK and beyond.

With your support, we'll be able to cover travel (12 people + some equipment) and accommodation expenses, allowing us to focus on what we do best: creating and sharing music. By donating, you’re not just helping us get to London—you’re helping us grow our fanbase, expand our influence, and expand our horizons. Join us on this journey and be a part of something truly magical!

Konkolo Orchestra is a Zürich-based musical project led by the multi-talented Alexis Malefakis, who brings his skills as a producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist to the forefront. With a fresh take on jazzy afrobeat and highlife, the Konkolo Orchestra vibes out to the legendary sounds of icons like Fela Kuti, Tony Allen, Ebo Taylor, and more. Konkolo Orchestra doesn’t just recreate afrobeat; it makes it his own, mastering the genre with confidence and flair.

With tracks featuring an impressive lineup of guest vocalists, including Nongoma (South Africa), Sir Frank Karikari (Ghana), and Kitio Batola (Congo), plus the percussive genius of Eric Owusu (Ghana), this album is a non-stop celebration. The uplifting lyrics and joyful melodies are powered by a horn section that swings with the soul of highlife.

Choosing standout tracks is tough when the entire album flows like one epic party, bursting with funk and syncopation. Malefakis has crafted a motivational soundtrack that keeps your feet moving and your spirits high.

In 2022 Konkolo Orchestra released its first single on Rocafort Records: “Blue G.” featuring the South African singer Nongoma Ndlovu.

Radio DJ and musical curator Gilles Peterson played the song several times on his BBC6 show and chose it for the playlist he curated for the catwalk show of British Designer Paul Smith at the Paris Fashion Show 2023.

“One of the big tunes of the year came from Konkolo Orchestra”
Gilles Peterson on BBC 6 Radio

Craig Charles reviewed the album ‘Future Pasts’ before its release in January 2024 on his radio show and recommended it to his listeners.

“Serious album! If you have a soft spot for hard driving euphoric afrobeat, you need to keep an eye for this LP.”
Craig Charles on BBC 6 Radio

Further international airplay included the Leeds (UK) based radio LDC Radio, Radio Paradiso (Netherlands), Pista de Fusta on 3Cat (Spain), Los Ultrasonicos on RTVE Radio (Spain). And Swiss radio SRG Couleur 3 on the Republic Kalakuta show invited Malefakis and vocalist Nongoma Ndlovu for an interview.

"A rabid, forceful and voracious record like this song that we find
to be massive to the max, called "How We Got Here", that we're going to listen to."
Bombín, Radio 3, RTVE

On social media the album had a viral moment when musical curator Josh at Somewhere Soul (https://www.instagram.com/som... featured it several times.

“I already know this will be one of my favourite albums of the year” Josh at Somewhere Soul

And it was reviewed by music magazines and by records stores.
“It's a joyous album from start to finish that does credit to the Afrobeat tradition while adding its own touches to the mix.” Juno Records

“An Afro Funk group, but one with a really uplifting vibe – a really special approach to the music that definitely sets them apart from the rest!”
Dusty Groove
