This project consists in giving group of adolescents with type 1 (insulin-dependent), aged 14 to 17 years, from Switzerland and Quebec, activities to share together the management of their disease and discuss the challenges and solutions that can help them to become more autonomous in the daily management of their treatment. After a first edition managed by the HUG in 2011, the Association Genevoise des Diabétiques (Geneva Association of Diabetics) organises another meeting that will bring together, for two weeks in the summer of 2016, 24 adolescents. Switzerland and Canada sometimes have some differences in their approach of the treatment that have greatly enriched adolescents during 1st meeting. Participants also witnessed a real awareness on the feeling of not being alone in living with type 1 diabetes. The exchange will take place from 8 to 24 July 2016 and will bring together 12 young participants from each country, boys and girls as well as the 4 nurses and 4 adults who will be supervising the project. The teenagers from Quebec will spend the first week in Switzerland, met with their exchange partners and in turn will receive the Swiss during the second week under the same conditions. Thus, at the heart of families, they will have the opportunity to speak of diabetes, constraints and share tips with each other. Swiss families are planning a program of visits and activities to accommodate Quebec participants, and make them live in various group experiences meant to strengthen the management of their diabetes. Type 1 diabetes (also known as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes) occurs when the pancreatic beta cells which normally produce insulin necessary to regulate blood sugar, are destroyed by the patient's immune system. Type 1 diabetes occurs most often in children and young adults but can affect people of any age. Type 1 diabetes is treated with daily insulin injections (with insulin pens or insulin pumps ). There is no way to prevent type 1 diabetes. The funding of this project must be completed before June 30, 2016. Several initiatives are planned to raise funds (see graph below) and we need to CHF 6’000 to fund an activity of two days in the mountains including a stay during the night in a cabin. This will allow them to learn how to manage their disease in height with a physical effort. I am a volunteer in a day centre for migrants where I got to know Mr Salloum, a Syrian refugee who arrived in Switzerland in September 2016. His family is in Damascus, Syria, and he is extremely worried about them. His wife, Hanan Awad, 37 years, suffers from a serious cardiac condition and urgently needs an operation. She takes care of their two children, Amir 5 years et Noor 3 years. The hospitals in Damascus are over-loaded and haven't been able to accept Hanan. Her only option is to go to a private hospital in Damascus, or in the neighboring Jordan or Lebanon. But a precise diagnosis ís very expensive, approximately CHF5000 and an operation at least CHF7000. The family cannot afford to pay for them. Let's help one Syrian mother so that she can get better and continue to take care of her children! Mr Salloum will be very grateful for every single donation, big or small. Here I have met Mr Salloum a few months ago who arrived in Switzerland in September (2016). Mr Salloum is from Syria. I wanted to help Mr Salloum as his situations is quite difficult. Mr Salloum, can you tell me about your family? Mr Salloum: Thank you for your this.. help and work with you. I am from Syria, doctor and have another diploma. I worked in Damascus and then I worked in Yemen, university in Yemen. After that I came to Geneva. I have a women (wife), I don’t know what happened to her but she is sick from the heart for 10 years. One day I don’t know what happened to her, her head turn… she lost her (consciousness) and fell to the earth. I take her to the doctor, he said she has problem with her heart. She wants operation, medical… She is not good. Before two weeks she take baby, I don’t know what happened but she fell down. She (dropped) the baby and she (the baby) broke her leg. Anna: So just to summarise, you are married, your wife is very ill for 10 years already, she has a heart disease, some kind of heart disease. She has been feeling very unwell in the recent months. Mr Salloum is very worried about her. Just recently, she was feeling very dizzy and she fell, she had one of his children in her arms and the child broke (her) leg. So we are looking for help for your wife specifically so that she can get better and take care of her children. What kind of treatment would she need? Mr Salloum: Madam, you know very well what happened in Syria. Now it has been 6 years war in Syria. Before we had hospital for government, no problem, we get money, government help, all good. Now no one can give (even) 1 franc because everyone want eat: no food, no clothes, no milk, no yoghourt… Anna: So we are looking for help from anyone who can give any money, either big donation or small donation, but all help is welcome to help Mr Salloum’s wife to get better so that she can take care of their children. The IACAPAP Challenge Grant is aimed at raising funds that will support programs, initiatives, activities and events organised by IACAPAP. We are particularly dedicated to developing initiatives for providing emotional support for children and their families living in areas affected by disasters and war. It was initiated by Prof Myron Belfer, the Honorary President of IACAPAP, who has pledged to match all donations collected for this grant.

IACAPAP Challenge Grant Phase II is a continuation of the previous project, which was initiated on May 20th, 2024. This crucial initiative is focused on securing funding to support IACAPAP fellowship programs. It aims to provide essential travel grant support to selected fellows participating in the Helmut Remschmidt Research Seminar and the Donald J Cohen Fellowship Program and operating fund to support the Early Career Group development program
